Chess Me Outside

The Netherlands is the board

Take the monument.

Walk to a real bridge, windmill or statue. Win one short chess challenge. It turns your colour on every player's map, until someone comes and takes it back.

How it works

Three steps to your first monument

  1. 1

    Find one

Your map shows every monument around you in the colour of whoever holds it. Grey means nobody has claimed it yet.

A bridge selected on the map, 82 metres away, with a Challenge button.
  2. 2

    Win the challenge

Stand at it and play: thirty to ninety seconds of chess at your own level. A fork, a mate in three, an endgame against Stockfish.

A mate-in-three position on the board, black to move, with a hint button.
  3. 3

    Hold it

Win, and it turns your colour for everyone and you pocket a pawn. Then somebody from another faction walks up.

The captured screen, washed in Bishops blue, with the rating change and the pawn.

Factions

Pick a side

Three factions, one map. Whichever you join, the other two want your street.

A rook in Rooks colours

Rooks

Straight at it. No detours.

A knight in Knights colours

Knights

Always coming round the corner.

A bishop in Bishops colours

Bishops

Halfway across the board already.

Up to four players of one faction hold a monument together. When another faction wins there, all four are out.

The challenge

One challenge. Thirty to ninety seconds.

Opening test

Play the first moves of a named line, as deep as your rating takes you.

Tactic

Fork, skewer, pin. Find it.

Mating pattern

Mate in two, three or four.

Endgame puzzle

One move decides it.

Endgame vs Stockfish

Lucena, Philidor. Convert it, or hold the draw.

Difficulty follows your own rating, so a beginner and a club player both sweat a little. Openings, tactics, mates and endgames are rated separately, because being sharp in the endgame says nothing about your Sicilian.

Free to play

Free, and never pay-to-win

Pawns buy impatience, never strength

Every win earns one pawn, and that is the only way to get one. Saving a challenge to play later from the couch is free. A pawn buys an extra slot, or skips the hour a monument rests after you play it. Nothing you buy wins you a monument.

The saved-for-later panel: four slots for challenges saved at a monument, playable from anywhere.

Free at every monument

Challenging is free, as often as you like. A player on zero pawns is one win away from a full wallet.

Hints cost the win

Take one for free. Solve it with the hint and you keep the answer, not the monument.

Your location stays yours

Read only while the app is open, never in the background. Other players see the monument, never you.

Your map too

Put your club or chess board on the map

Clubs, outdoor boards, and anything the map missed

Does your club play at a fixed venue? Is there a chess table in your park that the map does not know about? Send it in. A person checks it, and it becomes a monument every player in town can walk to. Free, and never worth more in the game than the bridge down the road.

Add a place

Your town is still grey.

Be the first colour on it.
