Chess Me Outside

Places that are not on the map

On the map you capture monuments and paint them your faction's colour. Some places do not belong in that game, and we keep them out on purpose.

What we keep off

Graves, cemeteries, war graves and war cemeteries. Memorials to victims, including Holocaust memorials and Stolpersteine.

The game asks you to stand somewhere, win a puzzle and take that monument for your colour. At a grave that is the wrong game in the wrong place.

Mosques, temples, synagogues, gurdwaras and shrines, in every country. Churches too, in the United States, India and Indonesia.

What stays

Commemoration by itself is no reason to leave a monument out. A hunebed, a city gate, a liberation monument a town gathers at every year: those stay, and they are part of why the map is worth walking.

The line is victims and mourning, not age or solemnity.

Outside the Netherlands every memorial stays off for now, liberation monuments included. A country's memorials come on only once a person has gone through them.

How we do it

Some of it is automatic, from what the public source says about a place. The unclear ones are read by a person, because no search can tell a liberation monument from a memorial to the deported. A war memorial still waiting for that look stays off the map until then.

A place we take out is not deleted but screened off: it disappears from the map and can no longer be played.

If you find one anyway

No list is complete, and you are standing in front of it while we are not. Mail support@chessmeoutside.com with the name or the location and we will take it off.
